Not as stellar as her book, Beast in View, but interesting. In its day the book could have used some editing. I love reviewing how women crime and mystery authors have developed through the years. Giving it four stars for those of us who are interested in the history of women mystery writers. Millar is an over-looked author, over-shadowed by her famous husband, Ross MacDonald.Product details

The Listening Walls eBook Margaret Millar Reviews
I picked this book up at the "Friends of The Library" at fort mason yesterday, San Francisco. This evening I finished reading its final page 236 and just shook my head at its ending. What a great read, so crisp and clear for a mystery novel that dates from 1959. You have the descriptive writing that adds so much to a simple story. You have the characters that jump right out of the pages at you even though you may know little of the period. You have 1950's San Francisco being identified by places and streets which you can imagine still existing today. And of course you have the mystery, who, where, when and why?
I found some very quotable paragraphs within this book's pages. Lines like
"deleted due to possible spoiler content"
As for the story its very simple yet walks you right into a very involved world of characters. Everybody gets into the act. Its the first line in the book that told me I would enjoy this book. The line reads "From her resting place in the broom closet Consuela could hear the two American ladies in room 404 arguing."
Also, the cover of the book, a painting of a pretty Mexican lady in traditional Mexican peasant attire with bracelets and hoop earrings, sneakily listening outside a door. The cover stirred in me all kinds of curious questions. Who's she sneaking up on? What is it she hears from the other side of the door? Why such a pretty girl would need to sneak around outside doors? What makes her so nosy that she listens through walls?
I suppose it being a quick read attributed to my enjoyment of it, but I also admired the writer's conservative way of using words with such description. Margaret Millar is a great story teller and weaver of mystery and suspense. And to think I'm not much of a mystery story reader. Thanks Margaret for teaching me a thing or two about story telling.
I read Margaret Millar's Ask for Me Tomorrow and I really enjoyed it. So I was very excited when I found an old, dog-eared copy of The Listening Walls at my local thrift store. The back of the book has the following comment from The New York Times' Anthony Boucher
"The finest modern fusion of `straight novel' and `novel of suspense' ... a plot of devious and surprising complexity with one of the best trick endings ever... unobtrusive brilliance."
While I liked the novel - it did not live up to my high expectations.
The plot concerns two women who are on vacation in Mexico City. One woman - Wilma - is a domineering, two-time divorcee who hates the world. The other woman - Amy - is her mousy friend. An eavesdropping housekeeper at the hotel describes Wilma and Amy's relationship.
Wilma dies by falling out of a hotel window and Amy then disappears. The setting then shifts to San Francisco and the novel is told from the perspective of Amy's brother (Gill) and her husband (Rupert). Gill and Rupert despise each other and Gill hires a private investigator to try to find out what really happened to Amy.
Millar makes excellent use of the settings; Mexico City and San Franscisco "come alive" for the reader. The characters are also believable. Ms. Millar was married to mystery novelist Ross Macdonald. Her characters remind me of Macdonald's characters - they are all tired of the world. However, with all due respect to Mr. Boucher, I did not think that the ending was great or that plot was especially inventive.
The Listening Walls is "pretty good." I give it three stars.
Anything written by this author is fantastic. I'm reading through everything she's written. Excellent book as our the rest of her books.
...might be because the "twist" isn't much of one.
I picked up this book based on a recommendation at the Mysterious Matters blog. I'll be taking their recommendations with a big grain of salt in future.
I really enjoyed THE FAR CRY by Fredric Brown and the description of this book sounded like it would be a similar edge-of-your-seat read with a surprising twist at the end.
This book wasn't badly written and if the ending had been at all surprising, I would have given this book 4 stars. The problem is, a book like this depends on the ending being great and if it's a letdown, the entire book fails as a result.
<spoiler>
First of all, the twist ending supposedly occurs on the last line of the book.
It doesn't. It occurs much earlier on when character X says they performed act Y.
There follows a lot of blathering by the other characters claiming that that can't possibly be true.
Last line Character X repeats yet again that they performed act Y.
My response You already said that, pages and pages ago. And it was letdown when you said it back then.
Not as stellar as her book, Beast in View, but interesting. In its day the book could have used some editing. I love reviewing how women crime and mystery authors have developed through the years.
